A Bold Solution to the Coaching Dilemma
A body of research indicates that the support of an effective coach can raise the level of a teacher's instruction to improve student achievement in the classroom. That being stated schools are faced with the reality that budgets, scheduling and coaching expertise, are all obstacles to developing a productive team of coaches.
Faced with this reality the Northern Valley Curriculum Center (NVCC), has implemented a bold program to build coaching capacity that fits both the needs and the limitations of each district. In the summer of 2012 the first cohort of new coaches met for 3 days in July. This learning experience included visits from nationally recognized coaching experts as well as well planned professional learning developed by the NVCC. After a year of experiences in the field these teacher met for a day of new learning in July of 2013.
With new experiences and learning a team of approximately 40 teachers are now coaching their peers to become more effective and skilled in the classroom.
The NVCC Coaching Academy is featured in the December issue of the Journal of Staff Development. This national journal outline the work of the Academy and the innovation and success that has been brought to the Northern Valley School.
